Toyota spotlights TTC-S development “loop” and the charging network behind the Lexus TZ
Lexus’ first three-row all-electric SUV, the TZ, debuted May 7 at Toyota Technical Center Shimoyama, as Toyota offered a behind-the-scenes look at how comfort tech and fast-charging access are being built together.
Lexus used its May 7 world premiere of the all-new TZ at Toyota Technical Center Shimoyama (TTC-S) to pull attention toward two things customers feel immediately, cabin comfort and the confidence of charging. In a new Toyota Times feature published June 3, Toyota followed up with a behind-the-scenes tour focused on TTC-S and the charging services Lexus says are expanding across Japan.
TTC-S sits between Toyota City and Okazaki in Aichi Prefecture, and it hosted media from across Japan and overseas for the TZ reveal. Toyota Times said the presentation also served as a setting to show how Lexus is translating its “Driving Lounge” concept, including quieter running and comfort adjustments designed for every row. Toyota Times reporter Yuta Tomikawa highlighted the TZ’s “Rear Comfort Mode,” saying while testing it, “How is this even possible?”
The feature also linked the vehicle’s on-road feel to the site’s development philosophy. Toyota described a cycle of “drive, break, fix, then drive again” as a public demonstration during the TTC-S event, and it noted that a representatives meeting before the premiere included remarks from Takashi Watanabe, president of Lexus International Co., emphasizing “taking on new challenges.”
That broader approach, Toyota said, is the point of TTC-S itself. Toyota’s global newsroom described TTC-S as an R&D center spread across Toyota City and Okazaki, where teams run an end-to-end loop of intense driving, deliberate breaking, rapid on-site repairs, and retesting. Toyota said construction started in April 2018 and full operations began in March 2024, framing the center as a Japan-based answer to earlier test-driving inspiration tied to the Nürburgring.
Toyota’s Japanese newsroom added more detail about the development environment. It described TTC-S as a “no walls” one-floor design intended to let design, engineering, evaluation, and maintenance complete within a single site, with about 3,000 people across different domains collaborating in the same space. It also outlined the physical setup, including a roughly 5.3-kilometer country road course modeled at one-quarter scale of a Nürburgring-like layout and an on-site maintenance area designed to enable prompt repairs tied to testing.
For the TZ itself, Lexus framed the model as its first three-row BEV (battery-electric vehicle) SUV, designed around the “Driving Lounge” idea. Lexus’ detailed TZ press materials described a lounge-like interior meant to encourage relaxation, paired with Lexus’ signature quietness and driving character. The press materials also called out “Rear Comfort” as a mode that prioritizes rear-seat comfort using a combination of hardware and software electrification technologies, with specifications varying by region and configuration.
Charging and power-delivery engineering is presented as part of that same “lounge” experience. Lexus said the TZ uses a motorized “2-in-1” charging lid designed to place AC and DC connectors side-by-side, with a four-link hinge to support compact, smooth opening and closing for use in tighter parking and home garage spaces. The TZ press materials also set out two battery options, a standard-range pack and a long-range pack, along with features such as battery preconditioning (including navigation-based and scheduled options) intended to shorten required charging time in low-temperature conditions. Lexus also said the TZ includes an AC external power supply function that allows use of electrical appliances with a dedicated adapter, and noted that the U.S. version uses NACS.
Toyota Times’ focus on charging infrastructure fits that hardware story into the Japanese charging landscape Lexus is preparing for customers. Lexus’ charging network information describes “LEXUS Charging” as a premium service that expands through Lexus dealers and Lexus charging stations, with fast chargers “continuously expanding” and app-based map searching and reservation. For broader public access, Lexus also points customers to networks under its “LEXUS Electrified Program,” including e-Mobility Power, which it says covers about 27,000 charging points nationwide (with about 10,000 fast and about 17,000 standard chargers) as of April 1, 2026, and the Premium Charging Alliance (PCA), which it says provides access to 350-plus fast chargers centered on Porsche, Audi, and Volkswagen dealer networks as of March 2026.
What remains less specific, at least in the Toyota Times feature itself, is how quickly the charging access will scale at a given location, or how final TZ production specifications will compare with prototype values. Lexus’ Japan premiere page explicitly notes that the displayed vehicle is a prototype and that retail specifications may differ. In addition, charger timing and availability depend on conditions and station capabilities, and Lexus’ charging network materials direct users to check in-app charger maps for the currently available equipment.
The next test for Toyota and Lexus is how these ideas perform together in the real world once the TZ reaches customers. Lexus said Japan sales are planned for “around winter 2026,” meaning the market will soon shift from a development-site tour to ownership and charging experience. Watch for updates on charging-station expansion, how Rear Comfort Mode and related cabin technologies are received, and whether Lexus adds more clarity on final specifications and timelines by region.
