Geathers’ pledge to the Gators comes in a recruitment story shaped by a shared high school connection with Tennessee offensive lineman David Sanders Jr.
Florida landed a new commitment on Thursday when 2027 three-star linebacker Tre Geathers chose the Gators over Tennessee. The decision adds another defensive piece to Florida’s recruiting class while also tying into an already-relevant storyline between the programs, namely the presence of Tennessee offensive lineman David Sanders Jr, who is Geathers’ former high school teammate.
Geathers and Sanders both came out of Providence Day School, a shared background that the Yahoo Sports report says played a central role in how Geathers’ recruitment evolved. The article frames it as more than just a general recruiting coincidence, describing how the relationship and the moment-to-moment influence of Sanders’ perspective helped Florida move ahead late in the process.
The reported timeline matters because it speaks to what recruiters often try to accomplish with connections across programs. In this case, the Gators’ push appears to have accelerated after Tennessee was already in position, and the report specifically notes that Geathers’ commitment came after Florida “passed” Tennessee in the recruitment. That language indicates a late swing rather than a commitment that was predetermined early, even though the details of the handoff are limited to what the report characterizes as a key moment.
Geathers is identified in the report as a three-star prospect and a linebacker for the 2027 class. While star ratings do not capture everything a team is building toward, linebacker recruiting is often treated as a priority category because of how frequently those players are asked to grow into roles that combine run defense, coverage responsibilities, and communication at the second level.
For Florida, a commitment from a player with a local program pipeline through Providence Day offers both talent and cultural fit. Recruiting based on prior relationships can also reduce uncertainty during the transition from high school football to the demands of an SEC environment, particularly when the shared teammate has already made his way into the Southeastern Conference as part of Tennessee’s roster.
Tennessee’s recruiting effort is also part of the competitive picture, even though Florida won this head-to-head matchup. The report positions Geathers’ choice against the backdrop of a known Tennessee connection through Sanders, which suggests the Vols were not recruiting from a distance. In recruiting, that kind of head-to-head pressure can make the difference between “in the mix” and “committed.”
What to watch next is whether Florida adds more prospects through the same network or whether this commitment indicates a broader defensive recruiting emphasis for the 2027 class. For Tennessee, the immediate takeaway is that the Vols missed on a position target where a high school tie could have helped reinforce the pitch. As the class cycle continues, the bigger question will be how both programs respond, either by securing the next linebacker/defensive commitment or by pivoting to alternative targets if recruiting momentum shifts.
