French President Emmanuel Macron opened portions of the Palace of Versailles to U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday night for a reception, guided tour and dinner centered on America’s 250th anniversary.
U.S. President Donald Trump toured the Palace of Versailles on Wednesday night before a private reception and dinner hosted by France’s President Emmanuel Macron, according to PBS NewsHour. The event took place at the historic palace associated with King Louis XIV, and it was arranged as part of ceremonial remarks marking the 250th birthday of the United States.
In coverage of the visit, PBS NewsHour said Macron “threw open” the palace to his U.S. counterpart for the evening program. The sequence included access for Trump to tour the Louis XIV-era site, followed by a private reception and a dinner later in the evening.
The dinner was described as a formal component of the anniversary program. The emphasis, as presented in the report, was on the shared occasion between the two presidents rather than on a separate public summit agenda or legislative outcome.
The visit unfolded in a setting that typically operates under controlled access rules because of its preservation and security requirements. While the report focused on the ceremonial aspects, it described the evening as an opening of the palace for a private reception, show and dinner involving both heads of state.
For France, hosting a U.S. president at Versailles aligns with a long-running diplomatic tradition of using landmark national sites to underscore political and cultural ties with the United States. For the United States, the program tied the trip to a major milestone year, framing the evening around the 250th anniversary rather than a specific bilateral announcement.
The report did not provide additional details in the public description about any formal agreements concluded during the event or about broader scheduling in Paris beyond the Wednesday evening program. The next steps following the dinner were likewise not specified in the item.
As the anniversary centerpiece, the Versailles portion of the visit highlighted the use of heritage locations in state diplomacy, with access granted for a limited, private schedule arranged by the French presidency and the U.S. delegation.
