Twins name Brian Reith next pitching coach, tapping a Tampa Bay Rays-developed track record

Minnesota’s pitching staff will be led by Brian Reith, who spent five seasons as Triple-A Durham’s pitching coach in the Rays system and produced one of the top control marks in the circuit.

The Minnesota Twins have named Brian Reith as their next pitching coach, the club announced Wednesday. Reith, 48, previously worked in the Tampa Bay Rays organization as the pitching coach for Triple-A Durham.

In five seasons with Durham from 2022-26, Reith’s staff issued 2,714 walks, the fewest among all Triple-A pitching staffs. The Bulls also ranked near the top in several additional run-prevention and command indicators, including a 1.37 WHIP (fourth), a 4.52 ERA (fifth), and 6,863 strikeouts (fifth).

Reith’s coaching path in professional baseball began with player-development roles and climbing levels of the Rays minor-league system. Before Durham, he was a pitching development fellow in 2021, a Single-A pitching coach in 2018-19 with Bowling Green, and a Short-A pitching coach in 2015-17 with Hudson Valley.

His resume also includes a longer stretch outside the Rays chain, including three seasons as pitching coordinator at SCORE International (2012-15) and playing experience that traces back to the New York Yankees organization. Reith was selected by the Yankees in the sixth round of the 1996 First-Year Player Draft and later appeared in major league games for the Cincinnati Reds.

Along with Reith’s appointment, Minnesota also named Ben Myers as assistant athletic trainer. Myers has spent eight seasons in the Twins organization, with his most recent five years working with the Triple-A St. Paul Saints from 2022-26.

Why It Matters

  • Pitching coach hires often shape how a club develops command and pitch-to-pitch repeatability, and Minnesota is bringing in a resume highlighted by top Triple-A walk suppression.
  • Reith’s Triple-A performance indicators suggest a development emphasis on limiting free baserunners, a skill set the Twins can translate across their pitching pipeline.
  • The move continues Minnesota’s strategy of staffing its major-league staff with coaches who have recently led and built functional minor-league rotations in established organizations.
  • By pairing the pitching coach change with an assistant athletic trainer appointment, the Twins are also reinforcing the broader support structure around player health and development.
