The Washington Times says the Air Force has suffered major aircraft attrition in its MQ-9 Reaper fleet across Middle East missions since the start of the Trump administration, including more than two dozen losses during the Iran-related campaign.
The U.S. Air Force has lost a substantial portion of its available fleet of MQ-9 Reaper remotely piloted aircraft in Middle East conflict zones, according to a Washington Times report published June 14, 2026. The paper reports that the losses amount to nearly one-third of the fleet that was available for operations since the start of the Trump administration, affecting the service’s ability to sustain long-running surveillance and strike-linked missions in the region.
The report attributes the attrition to the operational risks and failure rates associated with repeated deployments in contested air environments. It says the Reaper losses include more than two dozen aircraft lost in what it describes as the Iran war, a reference to U.S. military actions connected to Iran and related networks rather than a single named campaign.
Reaper drones are part of the U.S. military’s broader remotely piloted aircraft enterprise, used for persistent intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance, and in some missions for weapons delivery depending on configuration and authorization. Sustained losses in the fleet can have knock-on effects on coverage rates, training pipelines, maintenance workloads, and the ability to rotate aircraft between theaters without creating gaps in readiness.
The Washington Times report also asserts that the U.S. does not have a clear, publicly communicated plan to replace the lost Reaper aircraft at a pace sufficient to offset the damage. The report characterizes the replacement situation as uncertain, suggesting that decision-makers have not laid out a detailed pathway for replenishing the fleet that would match the scale of attrition.
For the armed forces, fleet losses are not only a combat readiness issue but also an institutional and budgetary one. When aircraft are destroyed or written off, the costs can extend beyond the immediate loss of airframes to include replacement procurement, spares, sustainment contracts, and the administrative and operational time required to field new or refurbished platforms. The report’s focus on the absence of an explicit replacement plan also raises questions about how the service prioritizes procurement schedules and which risks are being traded against operational demand.
Internationally, Reaper aircraft have also become part of the wider security picture that other regional actors watch for indicates of U.S. presence and capability. A reduced or unevenly supported drone fleet can affect how long the U.S. can maintain surveillance coverage over particular areas, and it can influence the pace at which commanders can shift assets in response to changing threats. Any change in operational tempo can carry downstream impacts for diplomacy, crisis management, and the protection of U.S. and partner forces.
The next practical step for the U.S. government, based on the issues highlighted in the report, would be greater clarity on how replacement capacity will be generated. That could involve procurement decisions, sustainment and recovery efforts for damaged aircraft, and adjustments to deployment models to preserve remaining assets. The report’s allegations indicate the concern is not only the loss itself, but the transparency and planning for how the fleet will be restored over time.
