U.S. Marshals arrest Frankfort man wanted on child sex abuse charges after multi-agency operation

A Frankfort man wanted on charges tied to alleged sexual abuse of a child under age 12 was arrested by U.S. Marshals during a multi-agency operation in Georgetown, federal and local reporting said. James N. Byrd Jr., 35, was taken into custody Tuesday after an indictment warrant was issued earlier this summer in Franklin County.

WKYT reported that Frankfort Police and the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office asked for help capturing Byrd on June 29, after investigators identified a known location for him in Georgetown. The following day, U.S. Marshals led the operation to arrest him at a local residence, according to the report.

LEX 18 News identified the location as Earls Way in Georgetown and said Byrd was taken into custody June 30 by the U.S. Marshals Service Central Kentucky Fugitive Task Force. The report said the federal task force coordinated with Frankfort Police, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department, Georgetown Police and the Scott County Sheriff’s Department.

Both outlets tied the arrest to a June 23 Franklin County indictment. LEX 18 reported that the indictment warrant of arrest was issued for Byrd on charges including rape in the first degree, sodomy in the first degree, and sexual abuse in the first degree with a victim under 12 years of age. LEX 18 also reported a separate charge for engaging in organized crime, described in the reporting as a criminal syndicate.

After the arrest, Byrd was transported to Franklin County, where the alleged offenses were said to have occurred, LEX 18 reported. The report also said Byrd was being held at the Franklin County Regional Jail following his arrest.

LEX 18 further reported that the grand jury indicted three other men on related counts described as involving rape, sodomy and sexual abuse, along with engaging in organized crime, including allegations involving a child under 12. The same report said bail was set at $250,000 full cash for each of the four defendants, citing the filed indictment.

As with all felony charges, the allegations have not been resolved in court, and defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
