The promotion removed three fighters from its active roster, a move that underscores UFC’s continuing effort to manage a crowded talent pipeline as it plans future matchups.
Ultimate Fighting Championship has released three fighters from its active roster in what has been described as the latest round of UFC roster trimming. The move, reported June 18, includes Guilherme Cruz, a veteran who has competed in the Octagon 16 times, and two additional fighters whose names were not specified in the available account. In UFC language, being removed from the active roster typically means a contract has been ended or that the promotion will not re-sign the fighter when the current deal comes to an end.
For Cruz, the key detail is the experience level. A 16-fight UFC run puts him in the category of fighters the promotion has often used as reliable opponents on busy event slates, particularly for rising challengers and contenders moving up through divisions. UFC’s decision to move on from a veteran with that kind of runway reflects a broader pattern across recent years: instead of only cycling prospects in, the roster management also cuts longer-tenured fighters who are not aligned with near-term booking plans.
UFC’s roster footprint has long been larger than the number of active contenders it can realistically feature at any given time. With multiple weight classes and an extended calendar of events, the promotion has to balance short-term matchmaking needs against the long-term goal of ensuring that enough fighters are under contract to maintain competition density. The result is that occasional “purges” happen, even when a fighter’s career is not defined by a single headline moment.
While the report frames the removals as releases and non-renewals, UFC roster actions do not always map cleanly onto a fighter’s long-term career prospects. Fighters sometimes remain active in the sport and can pursue new opportunities elsewhere, and some may later re-enter UFC’s orbit after the timing and matchups align. Still, being removed from the active roster is a meaningful change for planning, since it can limit immediate promotional pathways and complicate the process of securing a future UFC date.
The June 18 update also speaks to how UFC manages margins. When a promotion is constantly scanning for matchups that generate fan interest and stylistic clashes, it can become difficult to keep every contracted fighter positioned for a competitive booking window. Roster purges can therefore be as much about logistics and prioritization as they are about performance, even though fans often interpret them primarily through results and momentum.
For Cruz and the two unnamed fighters, the next phase will depend on what, if any, alternative opportunities open up and how quickly UFC can identify replacement matchups in the relevant divisions. At the same time, UFC’s fans will likely watch whether any of the cut fighters are replaced quickly by other contracted opponents or whether UFC instead accelerates the arrival of new talent to fill the gaps.
What to watch next is whether UFC follows up with announcements that clarify where vacancies are being created in the booking ecosystem. Even without knowing the two other fighters at this stage, the core story remains consistent: UFC continues to reshape its active roster, and those decisions tend to have downstream effects on who gets matched, how quickly divisions evolve, and how much opportunity exists for fighters currently seeking their next UFC fight.
