UK HealthCare breaks ground on $275M Hamburg East complex to expand access to specialty care for Lexington and Eastern Kentucky

The project, located in Hamburg East, targets substantial completion in December 2028 and the first patients in spring 2029, UK HealthCare said.

UK HealthCare on Thursday broke ground on a new $275 million medical complex in the Hamburg East area, a project designed to bring more specialty services closer to patients in Lexington and parts of Eastern Kentucky, according to WKYT.

The facility is planned as a major expansion of UK HealthCare’s footprint in the Lexington region, with the project timeline set so that substantial completion is expected in December 2028, the news station reported. UK HealthCare said it expects to begin serving the first patients in spring 2029.

Hamburg East has been developing as a commercial and healthcare corridor in recent years, and the new complex is positioned as part of UK HealthCare’s effort to reduce the distance patients may need to travel for specialty appointments and related care. The project’s announced goal is to improve access for communities across the region served by UK’s academic medical center.

When the building is completed and phased readiness steps are finished, the complex is expected to support specialty care delivery as patients begin transitioning to the new site in 2029, WKYT reported. UK HealthCare did not provide additional details in the report beyond the project cost and the timing for completion and first patient access.

The groundbreak follows UK HealthCare’s continued efforts to expand healthcare capacity in Central Kentucky, including investments intended to strengthen outpatient and specialty services. The new facility would represent a significant capital project for the health system given the $275 million price tag, with construction planned to run through the planned completion date in late 2028.

As construction proceeds, the next publicly stated milestones will be tied to December 2028 substantial completion and the spring 2029 start of patient care, according to the report. For families seeking specialty appointments, the schedule sets the period when services will be operating from the new Hamburg East location.

Why It Matters

  • The announced timeline sets when affected patients may see specialty services shift to or expand at the new Hamburg East site.
  • A $275 million capital project is a major spending decision that can affect regional healthcare capacity and scheduling during the 2026-2029 construction period.
  • Improving access to specialty care can reduce long-distance travel burdens for families across Eastern Kentucky.
  • The project’s milestones provide a public framework for when the community can expect the facility to be operational for patient care.
