Venice Classics Unveils 2026 Restorations Featuring Cassavetes, Buñuel, Rossellini and Roger Corman

The 83rd Venice International Film Festival will present 19 restored films in its Venice Classics program, including newly restored works by John Cassavetes, Luis Buñuel, Roberto Rossellini, Andrzej Wajda and Roger Corman, with additional titles by Roman Polanski and Ernst Lubitsch.

The Venice International Film Festival’s Venice Classics section has released its 2026 lineup of restored films, featuring works by John Cassavetes, Luis Buñuel, Roberto Rossellini and Roger Corman, along with titles from several other major directors whose restorations will be screened during the festival. The schedule of restorations was unveiled on Friday as part of the 83rd Venice International Film Festival organized by La Biennale di Venezia.

The Hollywood Reporter reported that the section is built around 19 restored features, curated by Venice artistic director Alberto Barbera with Federico Gironi. The festival said the screenings include world premiere presentations of restorations completed over the past year by film archives, cultural institutions and production companies from around the world.

Among the most highlighted restorations are John Cassavetes’ Minnie and Moskowitz (1971), Roger Corman’s The Wild Angels (1966) and Buñuel’s La Ilusión viaja en tranvía (Illusion Travels by Streetcar) (1954). The lineup also includes Roberto Rossellini’s Viaggio in Italia (Journey to Italy) (1954) and Andrzej Wajda’s Popiół i Diament (Ashes and Diamonds) (1958).

Additional highlights include Roman Polanski’s Cul-de-sac (1966) and Ernst Lubitsch’s To Be or Not to Be (1942), the festival’s anti-war satire among the restorations. The program is also set to open with a pre-festival screening of Tinto Brass’ Col Cuore in Gola (Deadly Sweet) (1967), according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Variety, covering the same Venice Classics announcement, said the restored selections also include Ettore Scola’s Brutti, sporchi e cattivi (Ugly, Dirty and Bad) (1976), Daniele Ciprì and Franco Maresco’s Lo Zio di Brooklyn (The Uncle From Brooklyn) (1995), and Florestano Vancini’s La Lunga Notte del ’43 (Long Night in ’43) (1960). The program further includes Dev Benegal’s English, August (1993) and Ann Hui’s The Story of Woo Viet (Woo Yuet Dik Goo Si) (1981), along with other restorations that broaden the section beyond Europe.

La Biennale di Venezia also published an announcement describing the Venice Classics restorations finalized for the 83rd Venice Film Festival.
