Viasat Selected by Lockheed Martin to Equip NOAA’s Next-Generation Hurricane Hunter Aircraft With Hybrid Satellite Communications

The subcontract for the C-130J program calls for line-fit, factory integration of Viasat’s Hybrid SATCOM Approach technology to support real-time transmission of storm research data, with service entry expected by 2030.

Lockheed Martin has selected Viasat to supply high-bandwidth satellite communications technology for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s next-generation “Hurricane Hunter” aircraft program, Viasat said on June 1. The work supports Lockheed Martin’s delivery of two specially modified C-130J Hercules Super Hercules aircraft, with options for additional aircraft, according to the companies’ announcements.

Hurricane Hunters are aircraft that fly directly into tropical storms to collect measurements used to improve hurricane forecasting and severe weather prediction. NOAA’s Office of Marine and Aviation Operations said the new C-130J aircraft will be modified to serve as flying laboratories for hurricane and environmental research and are expected to join the agency’s fleet in 2030, replacing the long-serving WP-3D Orion platform that has operated since the mid-1970s.

For the satellite communications portion of the modernization, Viasat’s contribution is centered on its Hybrid SATCOM Approach (HSA), an onboard communications architecture designed to provide connectivity across multiple satellite networks and orbits. In plain terms, HSA aims to give aircraft a standardized way to access high-capacity satellite links while keeping an upgrade path as the satellite ecosystem changes over time.

Viasat said it will provide engineering support, terminal hardware, and structural integration data to enable high-capacity connectivity on the C-130J platform. Viasat said NOAA’s configuration will integrate HSA’s ARINC 791/792-compliant antenna baseplate with Viasat’s Ku/Ka broadband antenna. ARINC 791 and ARINC 792 are industry standards that define how antenna structures and interfaces are mounted in aircraft, which Viasat argues can help streamline future upgrades without structural rework.

In a statement accompanying the selection, Viasat’s Victor Farah, senior vice president of government services and solutions, said the choice by Lockheed Martin validates the company’s approach to resilient airborne communications and enables standardized, ARINC-compliant integration. NOAA’s continued reliance on aircraft data underscores the operational value of dependable connectivity during missions, Viasat said, linking improved communications to better storm tracking, intensity forecasts, and evacuation impact.

What remains unclear is how much money is attached to the subcontract and the specific performance targets of the communications installation.
