Minnesota’s rookie defensive tackle Caleb Banks has been sidelined from offseason work while recovering from surgery on a fractured toe, but the team’s plan is to have him back by the time training camp begins.
The Minnesota Vikings are targeting a return to full-team participation for defensive tackle Caleb Banks as the team moves toward training camp. According to Pro Football Rumors, Banks has not yet taken part in offseason practices, with the main factor being his recovery from surgery on a fractured toe.
Banks’ situation has taken on extra attention because of the timeline that typically surrounds rookie development. He entered the league with injury concerns mentioned leading up to the draft, but those concerns did not translate into a prolonged absence from the immediate draft process, as his name was called on Day 1. Even so, his spring work has so far been limited to observing rather than participating in standard practices.
The practical impact of that distinction is straightforward. For a first-year defensive tackle, early offseason availability is usually tied to learning technique, building chemistry in the interior rotation, and adjusting to NFL pacing and strength training. With Banks reportedly in the observer role, Minnesota’s staff will have less on-field time with their newest interior piece before camp opens.
Pro Football Rumors frames the Vikings’ focus as a matter of readiness rather than a long-term unknown. The report indicates the team is aiming to have Banks available by training camp, suggesting Minnesota expects his recovery to progress on a schedule that would allow contact practice and more intensive evaluation of his role inside the defensive front.
Still, the report comes with the typical caveat attached to foot and toe injuries in the NFL context: availability can change if healing takes longer than projected or if the player needs additional time before returning to full workload. Since Banks has not yet been part of offseason practices, the next checkpoint is whether he can transition from observing to participating in the Vikings’ planned team activities.
For Vikings fans, the near-term question is less about whether Banks can eventually return and more about how quickly he can ramp up once he’s cleared. Training camp is where the coaching staff’s evaluations begin to sharpen, and the timing of Banks’ participation could shape how much the team relies on him early in camp and how quickly he can absorb the scheme for the defensive line rotation.
