Vikings Set Week 7 Plan for RB Jordan Mason’s Return to Practice

Minnesota is opening a 21-day evaluation window after Jordan Mason suffered a hand injury early in the season and has been rehabbing since surgery.

The Minnesota Vikings plan to bring running back Jordan Mason back to practice this week, following a Week 6 bye that the team described as a timely reset for its backfield. The club announced the move Monday, aligning with an NFL evaluation window that runs 21 days from the start of practice.

Mason’s return to the practice field comes after a hand injury sustained in Week 1 required surgery. The Vikings have been working him back since that procedure, and the team said the goal of the practice window is to confirm he is ready before Minnesota activates him.

Minnesota’s backfield depth picture centers on both Mason and Aaron Jones, Sr., with the Vikings describing both as starting-caliber options and previously intending to keep them fresh through a rotation. That plan required adjustment once Mason went down early, shifting more work to Jones during the subsequent stretch.

Jones has been carrying a heavier share of production in the games since, including a Week 6 stretch that featured 23 carries for 105 yards against Chicago and 17 carries for 58 yards at Tampa Bay. He also added a 20-carry, 94-yard effort with receiving production against Miami and followed with 25 carries for 113 yards, including an 8-yard run for a fourth-quarter go-ahead touchdown, in a 23-13 win at New Orleans.

With the Vikings positioned as a fast-moving threat on offense through the first part of the season, the next question is how quickly Mason can be cleared from the practice window. Minnesota hosts the Indianapolis Colts at noon CT Sunday at U.S. Bank Stadium.

Why It Matters

  • The practice window sets a near-term roster timeline for whether Minnesota can restore its intended running-back rotation.
  • Because Mason’s return follows a Week 1 hand injury, his availability affects how much workload Minnesota can shift back toward his role rather than keeping Jones on the heavy-touch pace.
  • For a team that has started 5-0, reinforcement in the backfield can help protect offensive consistency across the coming weeks.
