Volantis strikes out 10 as Texas takes Game 1 of Austin Super Regional over Oregon

Texas opened its NCAA Austin Super Regional against Oregon with an 11-3 win that left the Longhorns one victory from the College World Series. The deciding factor on Saturday night was the pitching of Dylan Volantis, who finished with 10 strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings and kept Oregon from cashing in on a game that featured plenty of base runners and chances. Texas converted early momentum into a lead it never relinquished, then turned the series opener into a comfortable cushion for the next two days at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

Volantis delivered a controlled start that fit the postseason stakes. According to Texas, he threw a career-high 110 pitches, struck out 10 batters, allowed two earned runs, and stranded 10 baserunners along the way. The Longhorns overall registered 15 strikeouts as a staff, and their bullpen closed the door after Volantis handed them a sizable lead. Oregon’s lineup had moments, but it never got extended, consistent offense going against Texas’ mix of strikeout ability and defensive prevention.

Offensively, Texas attacked Oregon’s starter early and spread production across multiple innings. Adrian Rodriguez provided the biggest burst, posting a career-high five RBI, including a two-run double in the first inning. Texas then extended the advantage with another scoring frame in the second, when Casey Borba homered, followed by additional offense later that stretched the lead to 7-0 through five innings. The Longhorns did not rely on a single inning to pull away, they did it in sequence.

Rodriguez added another run-scoring hit in the fifth, and Texas continued to put pressure on Oregon’s pitching staff with a combination of extra-base damage and opportunistic baserunning. Texas also benefited from free baserunners. Oregon reported that the teams combined for 17 walks and five hit-by-pitches, and that the Ducks stranded a season-high 17 runners in the game. Oregon out-hit Texas 9-8, but it went 0-for-14 with runners in scoring position, a split that captured how Texas’ pitching and situational defense protected the score.

From Oregon’s perspective, the loss was as much about missed chances as it was about Texas’ dominance. Head coach Mark Wasikowski characterized the game as “sloppy” on both sides and later summarized the reality of the series as “the first team to win two.” With the opener decided, the Ducks face a must-win scenario to keep their Omaha hopes alive, because the tournament format will not offer a second-life opportunity after Sunday unless they force Monday’s winner-take-all Game 3.

For Texas, the path becomes clear after Game 1. Texas Athletics said the Longhorns are one win away from advancing to the College World Series for the 39th time in program history, and that the win sets up an attempt to clinch in the series’ next game. On Sunday, Oregon will turn the page quickly and give the ball to Will Sanford, who the Ducks said struck out a career-high 14 in his previous start and earned MVP honors in the NCAA Eugene Regional. The next look at the matchup will determine whether Texas can finish this series cleanly or if Oregon’s offense can turn those earlier opportunities into a turnaround.
