A fast reset after a tough extra-inning defeat, with Ureña’s early control and a late bullpen hold turning into a clean statement win at Sutter Health Park.
The Angels found a cleaner path back to the win column on Saturday, shutting out the Athletics 7-0 behind a dominant stretch from right-hander Walbert Ureña and a bullpen that protected a late lead at Sutter Health Park.
Coming off a frustrating loss in which Oakland strung together late damage after a seven-run Angels lead in the sixth inning in the prior game, Los Angeles had reason to be cautious about carrying that sting forward. Instead, the team re-established its focus quickly, with Ureña setting the tone by delivering five scoreless innings to slow the Athletics’ rhythm from the start.
Ureña’s work gave the Angels a steady base while their offense continued to produce in multiple ways. In the win, the Angels were credited with contributions across the lineup, with eight different batters collecting at least one hit, a sign that the game plan did not depend on a single swing or matchup.
As the game moved into the later stages, the Angels’ offense pushed the advantage into a seven-run late lead. The bullpen then finished the job, holding that advantage without allowing the kind of late breakdown that had defined the previous night’s loss.
The result ended a three-game losing streak for Los Angeles, providing a reset not only in the standings picture that matters over a long season, but also in the day-to-day confidence teams look for after a demoralizing run of outcomes.
For Oakland, the shutout was another difficult note to absorb. Without enough offensive punch to get on the board, the Athletics were forced to watch their attack go quiet in the face of Ureña’s early command and the Angels’ ability to keep the game from slipping away once the lead was established.
What to watch next is whether the Angels can turn this kind of execution into consistency. Ureña’s performance suggests their starters can still provide stability, and the way the bullpen handled a large late cushion points to depth being there when the offense supplies a margin. If Los Angeles sustains that balance, the turnaround effects can last beyond a single game.
