Warren presses HHS Secretary RFK Jr. on whether cyclosporiasis response was influenced by donations tied to Trump-linked groups

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) has asked Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to explain whether the Trump administration’s response to a cyclosporiasis outbreak was influenced by donations from a major produce supplier to groups associated with President Donald Trump, according to a letter she sent to Kennedy on Thursday.

Warren’s request comes as she characterizes the administration’s outbreak response as a “botched response” and seeks information she says is necessary to evaluate potential conflicts of interest and the basis for federal decisions, the Hill reported. In her correspondence, Warren asked whether political contributions or relationships linked to Trump-associated groups played any role in how the administration handled the situation.

The letter focuses on a produce distributor identified by Warren as a major supplier and on donations connected to groups she says are linked to President Donald Trump. Warren’s questions ask Kennedy to clarify whether those donations were considered or otherwise factored into the administration’s actions during the outbreak, and to provide details on what information or communications officials relied on, the Hill said.

Warren’s inquiry is part of broader congressional oversight of the federal health agencies’ outbreak management, including how agencies assess public health risks, communicate guidance, and coordinate enforcement or other actions that can affect food supply chains. The senator’s letter directs attention to the administrative process behind outbreak-related decisions, not only the end result.

The Hill report frames the issue as a question of influence and accountability. Warren is pressing for transparency on whether the administration’s outreach or response posture reflected ordinary public health decision-making, or whether it aligned with interests tied to political fundraising and relationships rather than solely to public safety.

Kennedy, as the HHS secretary, oversees key departments and functions involved in public health preparedness and response. In the letter, Warren is effectively requiring a written account from the top HHS official on the factual basis for the administration’s outbreak handling and on any potential intersections between federal health work and outside political activity.

A response from Kennedy would determine what, if any, steps HHS says it took to prevent inappropriate influence, how officials describe the decision-making process for the outbreak, and whether the department will provide documentation related to the donations Warren referenced.
