Watchdog investigations tied to Alexis Podesta could complicate Xavier Becerra campaign

California political watchdog scrutiny of lobbyist Alexis Podesta could become a campaign distraction for Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Xavier Becerra, according to a report published July 3 by the New York Post.

The report ties Podesta to a separate public-corruption matter that prosecutors described as involving the secret use of an FBI wire, stating Podesta “secretly wore an FBI wire” to help take down Gavin Newsom’s former chief of staff. It also says Podesta is the subject of multiple investigations by California’s Fair Political Practices Commission.

According to the report, one of the Fair Political Practices Commission matters involves a political committee connected to Becerra’s operation. The report also says Podesta is being investigated for an allegation that she failed to disclose more than $1 million in lobbying income.

The report further describes Podesta as part of a broader federal case in which Newsom-era staffer Dana Williamson, identified in the report as Podesta’s longtime mentor, pleaded guilty to federal tax and wire fraud charges in May. It says Williamson had pleaded guilty in that case and later handed much of her political consulting business to Podesta after joining Newsom’s administration in late 2022, including work described as connected to Becerra’s political campaigns.

The New York Post report says campaign records show Becerra maintained a political committee for a potential run for state superintendent of public instruction in 2030. It states that the Podesta Company was paid at least $170,000 in 2023 and 2024 for campaign consulting, and that those payments occurred while Becerra held a federal Cabinet post.

The practical question raised by the report is not whether any committee or ethics charge is proven, but how the timing and scope of Fair Political Practices Commission proceedings could intersect with campaign operations and public disclosure requirements during the run-up to California state elections.

Becerra and his allies have faced additional scrutiny before, but the current reporting centers on whether Podesta’s alleged nondisclosure and other potential ethics issues could draw attention back to the gubernatorial campaign’s relationships, contracts, and reporting practices, and whether any corrective filings or enforcement actions follow from the watchdog’s inquiries.
