A June 18 preview column frames Jason Onye as a player worth tracking for Notre Dame’s defensive front, pointing to three themes the writer says stand out this season.
The Notre Dame football conversation in June is already turning toward the internal storyline that often decides how teams are perceived when fall camp begins, and Yahoo Sports added to that mix with a position-focused look at defensive tackle Jason Onye. In a column published June 18, 2026, the outlet presented its “best 20” framing for Notre Dame and then zeroed in on Onye with what it called “three things I like” about him.
The structure matters because it is not a broad scouting report. The article is built around a ranked-season narrative, where the goal is less about proving a point with numbers and more about explaining how a player fits the way a program is likely to operate. By choosing a defensive tackle as the featured subject of one entry in the list, the writer is essentially telling readers to pay attention to the middle of Notre Dame’s defensive front as a development point to watch.
For Notre Dame, the defensive tackle position is often where early confidence can show up. A tackle’s value shows through baseline physicality and consistent leverage, particularly in run defense and in helping linebackers play downhill without having to compensate. Even when teams are still installing assignments in the offseason, the player’s ability to hold ground and force offenses to adjust can be a reliable indicator of what a defense wants to emphasize come September.
Onye’s mention in this specific format suggests that Yahoo Sports believes his profile aligns with the traits that tend to be prioritized by top college defenses: disruptive interior play, reliability in routine snaps, and the capacity to affect blocking schemes rather than merely chasing statistics. The column’s choice to make him the center of “three things” also implies there are identifiable aspects of his game the writer sees as repeatable, not just situational.
It is also worth noting what the piece is not doing. This is not an official Notre Dame release, and the column is presented as an opinion within a list-driven sports landscape. Without additional primary material such as Notre Dame roster notes, coaching comments, or publicly verifiable game-by-game production data referenced in the article text, readers should treat the “like” framing as a scouting perspective rather than a confirmed projection.
Still, the timing is meaningful. June coverage often sets the early agenda for the media and fans before official preseason team reports begin to accumulate. If the themes the writer emphasized resonate with how the defense is expected to function, Onye becomes a natural name to follow through the next stages of the offseason, including any public practice observations and fall-camp context.
What to watch next is straightforward. If Notre Dame’s defensive front is described in subsequent official or team-linked material in ways that match the column’s themes, the preseason narrative will likely stick. Conversely, if the program’s reported emphasis shifts away from interior traits the writer highlighted, then this column should be viewed as one perspective rather than a definitive roadmap. Either way, Onye’s inclusion in a “best 20” list keeps him on the radar as Notre Dame moves from spring discussion toward the fall evaluation cycle.
