MLB’s two-phase fan balloting format is back in focus, and one White Sox-linked name is again asking for more support as the process narrows to the eventual starters.
MLB All-Star voting, once again, is becoming a test of how fans divide their attention across a deep field of position players. In a team-hosted note tied to the White Sox fan base, MLB’s balloting format is emphasized, and the message is direct: Colson deserves more votes as the league moves through its multi-stage starter selection.
The core of the process is two phases of fan voting that determine the All-Star starters. Rather than treating the ballot as a single, winner-takes-all event, MLB’s format asks fans to weigh in, then revisit the ballot again as the league narrows the field to the group that will ultimately earn starting roles at the Midsummer Classic.
That structure matters because it changes how campaigns are built. A player can be visible in early rounds and still fail to convert that early support into enough votes to land among the final starter picks. The same player can also benefit if fans choose to consolidate support in the second phase, when the voting focuses more tightly on the group that still has a realistic path to starting.
Within that framework, the White Sox-related argument is less about the mechanics and more about the outcome fans can shape. The team’s column frames the fanbase’s participation as meaningful, praising voters for engaging with the process and then turning that praise into a straightforward request: keep Colson’s name near the top as ballots progress.
There is also a broader point, beyond any single roster spot. All-Star starters are not simply a reflection of league-wide attention in one snapshot. With two separate stages of voting, the outcome can reward sustained interest, timely fan mobilization, and the ability to keep a campaign visible through the point when the ballot tightens.
What to watch next is how voting behavior shifts as the two-phase system moves from early momentum to final starter selections. If fans distribute support too widely, even deserving players can fall short of the top vote-getters. If they coalesce, the second phase becomes the decisive moment for which position players translate popularity into a starting lineup.
For Colson, the story is essentially a reminder that All-Star voting is not passive. Fans do more than cast a ballot, they decide which players remain prominent enough to win the final starter spots that will be announced when MLB’s process runs its course.
