World Cup ticket buyers sue StubHub in Manhattan federal court after alleged canceled seats

A proposed class action filed in New York accuses the resale platform of canceling World Cup tickets after customers paid for specific matches, alleging violations of StubHub terms and FIFA’s rules for third-party sellers.

World Cup fans who bought tickets through StubHub are suing the ticket resale platform, alleging it abruptly canceled their orders for matches at major U.S. venues, leaving buyers out thousands of dollars or additional nonrefundable travel costs. The complaint, filed as a proposed class action in Manhattan federal court, describes the canceled ticket events as a failure to deliver the purchase the customers say they paid for.

According to the lawsuit, at least one plaintiff in California purchased three tickets for a June 18 match at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles through StubHub for a total of $1,905. The plaintiff later discovered StubHub had canceled the order, the complaint says, and alleges that this cancellation violated StubHub’s own terms of service.

A second named plaintiff alleges he spent nearly $3,000 for two tickets to watch Mexico play South Korea, only to have those tickets canceled as well. The complaint says StubHub refunded the ticket price, but that the plaintiff did not recover additional travel costs, making the total harm greater than the refund amount.

The suit also raises allegations about StubHub’s authorization and customer protections for FIFA World Cup tickets. It claims StubHub was not authorized to sell World Cup tickets and that the platform failed to honor its “FanProtect Guarantee,” which is described in the complaint as an assurance intended to ensure the authenticity of World Cup tickets purchased on StubHub.

In addition, the complaint argues that consumers were induced into purchases on a marketplace that depends on high demand and limited supply. The filing quotes language asserting that, “with high anticipation comes high likelihood for taking advantage of the consumers willing to pay,” and that the “odds of consumers facing high prices and a difficult to navigate market were almost guaranteed.”

The lawsuit further contends that because many buyers turned to secondary marketplaces such as StubHub for access to matches that were not guaranteed through official channels, customers were exposed to a risk that did not exist when tickets were sold directly under FIFA’s own control. The complaint says FIFA only guarantees validity for tickets it sells directly and limits sales through third-party sellers such as StubHub.

StubHub has not been described in the CBS News report as admitting wrongdoing, and the lawsuit remains pending. If the court certifies a class, the case would proceed with claims focused on the alleged canceled tickets, refunds versus uncompensated expenses, and whether StubHub’s conduct violated its promises, contractual terms, and consumer-protection obligations described in the complaint.

Why It Matters

  • Ticket cancellations and disputes can affect families and communities planning trips around major sporting events, especially when travel and lodging costs do not follow the same refund timelines as ticket purchases.
  • The case centers on how secondary ticket marketplaces describe authority, authenticity guarantees, and contractual promises, and whether those representations match what customers receive.
  • If the allegations are sustained, the lawsuit could expand potential liability for ticket resellers and increase scrutiny of consumer-protection compliance and dispute handling in high-demand events.
  • The filing’s claims about third-party ticket limits tied to FIFA’s practices could influence how buyers assess risk when using resale platforms rather than purchasing through official channels.
  • The outcome may shape how courts evaluate refund practices versus broader damages when an event ticket purchase falls apart close to match day.
