Apple rolls out updates to Apple Creator Studio, expanding iPad editing, Cinematic-mode workflows, and app collaboration tools
The company’s Creator Studio update adds deeper image selection features in Pixelmator Pro, new ways to refine Cinematic mode video captured on iPhone, and fresh templates and productivity upgrades across Keynote, Pages, Numbers, and Freeform.
Apple on Tuesday announced a set of upgrades to Apple Creator Studio, the company’s bundled lineup of creative and productivity apps aimed at users who make videos, design assets, and build documents and presentations. The update spans multiple platforms, including new editing tools in Pixelmator Pro, workflow changes for video editors using Final Cut Pro and Motion, and new collaboration and content-creation features across Keynote, Pages, Numbers, and Freeform.
Pixelmator Pro is receiving a series of enhancements intended to make advanced selection work more practical on iPad. In the app, Pixelmator Pro for iPad adds edge-refinement tools for “advanced selections,” and Apple said the iPad version now includes Select and Mask controls that mirror capabilities on Mac. The company also highlighted the ability to preserve fine detail along complex edges such as hair or fur.
Beyond edge refinement, Pixelmator Pro is expanding its template library. Apple said Pixelmator Pro adds two new template collections on both Mac and iPad, including designs for sports and “action-packed” projects, along with templates built for launching a new creative idea, business, or product. Apple also introduced a new Podcasts category within the app, featuring cover artwork designed to help podcast shows stand out, sized for major podcast platforms.
For video workflows, Apple focused on how users can apply Cinematic mode effects to footage captured natively on iPhone 18 Pro. In the Creator Studio update, Final Cut Pro and Motion on Mac add ways to add Cinematic mode effects during editing, with editors able to adjust focus points and depth of field directly in the Final Cut Pro timeline.
Apple said Compressor, the company’s media encoding and export tool, will also be updated for this use case. Compressor can convert video with Cinematic mode effects back into the previous Cinematic mode format, and it will introduce new HEVC and MPEG-4 export presets aimed at social sharing. HEVC, or High Efficiency Video Coding, is a modern compression standard used to deliver high quality at smaller file sizes.
In the documentation and presentation suite, Apple said Keynote, Pages, and Numbers are gaining new templates and creative tools. The company also described improvements that make it easier to collaborate and request access to a shared presentation, document, or spreadsheet in the moment, rather than forcing users to coordinate permissions before they start editing.
Apple’s update further targets reading and problem-solving workflows. Pages for Mac adds Screen View, which the company says optimizes content for reading and focused writing. Numbers adds new functions, including trigonometry, statistics, and logic functions, positioning the changes as a way to solve more complex problems inside a spreadsheet.
Freeform, Apple’s digital whiteboard and brainstorming app, is also getting multiple changes. Apple said boards will automatically adapt to Dark Mode, and folders will let users organize boards into collections while inviting others to collaborate. Freeform’s Writing Tools using Apple Intelligence are set to rewrite, proofread, and summarize handwritten notes, and users can request access to collaborate on shared files or automate adding content using Shortcuts.
For users in Apple’s spatial computing ecosystem, the update also points to future capability in visionOS. Apple said Freeform will become more powerful in visionOS 27 by allowing users to pull multiple items from a board, including images, videos, sticky notes, shapes, and 3D models, into their space, with a grouped view of 3D models.
Why It Matters
- By strengthening editing and selection tools across iPad and Mac, Apple is making it easier for creators to produce polished results without switching ecosystems.
- The emphasis on a Cinematic mode workflow that starts on iPhone and continues on Mac suggests Apple is aligning its hardware capture features with its pro-video software suite.
- Collaboration and permission-request improvements in Apple’s productivity apps may reduce friction for teams working on shared documents, presentations, and spreadsheets.
- Freeform’s handwriting tools and board organization features reinforce Apple’s push to position creative ideation as a mainstream workplace workflow, not just a niche design tool.
