Army innovation moves into operational use under ECU-Army Reserve agreement

An innovative predictive maintenance project developed through an Army innovation program is moving into operational use under a new 10-year agreement.

GREENVILLE, N.C. – An innovative predictive maintenance project developed through an Army innovation program is moving into operational use under a new 10-year Intergovernmental Services Agreement between the Army Reserve Command and East Carolina University.

The agreement advances a research effort that uses low-cost sensors, predictive analytics, machine learning and real-time data integration on an intuitive dashboard to improve monitoring and maintenance of Army Reserve facilities nationwide.

The Catalyst Pathfinder program, managed by the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command, or DEVCOM, Army Research Laboratory in partnership with the Civil-Military Innovation Institute, connects Soldiers, researchers and innovation partners to accelerate Soldier-driven solutions from research to real-world use.

The partnership began in 2023 as a research project, initially funded at approximately $1 million by DEVCOM ARL through the Catalyst Pathfinder program. ARL is the Army's sole fundamental research laboratory to advance science for the Soldier.

The effort was launched to address a significant challenge for the Army Reserve Command in monitoring building systems. Critical data was housed in two separate platforms, which created inefficiencies, added operational complexity and increased the risk of errors and oversight.

Researchers at East Carolina University developed a predictive maintenance model that integrates low-cost wireless sensors into existing Army Reserve facilities. The model assesses building use and maintenance needs on a dashboard and forecasts budgets. It also leverages data such as building usage, temperature and local weather conditions to predict maintenance needs.

The research team worked alongside Soldiers at Fort Bragg and in Winterville, North Carolina, as well as in Massachusetts, Texas, Wisconsin and Puerto Rico, to develop the prototype and provide more efficient, reliable and sustainable infrastructure management.

The new agreement, which could be worth more than $6 million over its lifetime, transitions the project from prototype to operational capability. This arrangement enables the project’s expansion to more Army Reserve installations each year, including the 63rd, 81st, 88th and 99th Readiness Divisions and the 1st and 9th Mission Support Commands.

The innovation will improve maintenance monitoring, enable early identification of potential maintenance issues and support more efficient and data-driven management of Army Reserve facilities.

The Catalyst Pathfinder program leverages ARL’s expertise to foster direct collaboration between Soldiers, researchers and industry to accelerate the development and deployment of cutting-edge solutions to meet evolving operational needs. By bridging fundamental research, applied science and real-world Army needs, the program ensures that cutting-edge science turns into solutions that reach Soldiers faster and more efficiently.

DEVCOM ARL is the Army’s sole fundamental research laboratory serving as the nexus of science between the military, academia and industry. Operating under U.S. Army Futures and Concepts Command and the U.S. Army Transformation and Training Command, ARL executes globally recognized research to accelerate delivery of war winning, disruptive technologies for tomorrow’s Army.
