On the Move: Kirk Clinic Nurses Bring Lifesaving Breast Cancer Awareness Directly to APG Workforce

ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. - Army Public Health Nursing (APHN) personnel at Kirk U.S. Army Health Clinic (KUSAHC) are taking a proactive stance on preventive medicine this October, bringing lifesaving Breast Cancer Awareness Month resources, tools, and educational campaigns directly to the Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG) workforce.

The mobile campaign, led by KUSAHC representatives Ms. Crystal Wright and Ms. Kristine Trusty, is designed to bring critical health information directly to active-duty service members (ADSMs), civilian staff, and military families where they work and live.

The motivation behind the mobile initiative is rooted in KUSAHC's broader commitment to preventive medicine, wellness, and medical readiness.

"By bringing resources directly to APG locations, Army Public Health Nursing is helping to ensure that our ADSM, civilian staff, and beneficiaries have access to vital health information and reminders of screenings right where they work," Wright and Trusty said in a joint statement.

To maximize visibility and outreach across the installation, the mobile tour is targeting high-traffic areas, including the main Kirk Clinic lobby, the APG Commissary, and various tenant command headquarters.

During outreach events, APG personnel can interact with physical, educational tools designed to take the mystery out of preventative self-care.

Educational pamphlets outline the critical importance of regular screenings.

Guides on what patients should expect during an outpatient mammogram.

Lifelike breast self-examination models with palpable lumps and realistic tissue textures to provide hand-on instruction.

These models allow participants to practice identifying abnormalities, reinforcing real-world self-examination techniques in a supportive, educational environment.

For active-duty female service members, early detection is directly linked to operational readiness. Early diagnosis typically translates to more effective, less invasive treatment options, which minimizes recovery times and ensures personnel remain operationally fit to support the national defense mission.

While the disease primarily affects women, the KUSAHC team is also engaging active-duty male service members, providing them with tailored information on rare male breast cancer risks and symptoms.

The mobile initiative has already generated significant emotional impacts across the installation.

"The response has been overwhelmingly positive," the team noted, recalling a recent encounter with a female soldier who was hesitant to seek a screening after losing her mother to the disease. "After our conversation, she felt empowered to make an appointment to get a mammogram and committed to providing encouragement to the women in her unit to take advantage of the screenings and resources available, highlighting the domino effect of awareness."
