The Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group (ARG), composed of Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8); San Antonio-class amphibious transport docks USS Anchorage (LPD 23) and USS John P. Murtha (LPD 26); the embarked staffs of Amphibious Squadron (PHIBRON) 7; 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (13th MEU); and associated aviation, logistics, and ground combat elements arrived at Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Oct. 26, 2026, for maintenance and resupply.
The visit provides the crews an opportunity to leverage Yokosuka’s premier port facilities, while continuing to build the relationship with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. Time in port also allows the Marines and Sailors to experience the local culture, instilling resilience among the crew and ensuring the readiness of the ARG/MEU.
Before the port visit, commanders emphasized to crews that they are expected to uphold good order and discipline, comply with the liberty policy, and treat their Japanese hosts with respect.
The Makin Island ARG and embarked 13th MEU are conducting routine operations in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations. The ARG/MEU, alongside our allies and partners, is committed to an Indo-Pacific that is free and open, connected, prosperous, secure, and resilient for all nations.
